UPS System Design

Initial design using all the data available is critical in establishing a cost effective, well designed and maintained UPS system. Some of the design data that CEDS UPS technicians will take into considerations may include:

  • Strength of the floor structure to accommodate the additional load.
  • Requirement for raised floor system.
  • UPS equipment considered including quality, layout, run time requirement.
  • Power availability and electrical integration.
  • Standby generator requirements.

Other factors to take into account include – type of monitoring required, temperature control, battery bank placement (if any required) and ease of access and maintenance.

As soon as you start thinking of UPS and UPS systems for your private or business use, feel free to call CEDS, we may be able to help you and guide you for the best options and successful implementation of either brand new setup or existing upgrade of your UPS system.

Supply, Install and Commission

After understanding your UPS requirements and looking at the design specifications agreed on, CEDS UPS technicians can source the brand of UPS specified. The size of UPS sourced from our suppliers varies from standard desktop units to large units suitable for datacentres.

CEDS will work together with our electrical team to carry out any power analysis and electrical upgrade if it is required prior to installing the UPS onsite.

Once the UPS is installed, full testing and commissioning is undertaken as specified by the supplier and a comprehensive report is completed for the supplier and clients.

Site Power and Power Quality Analysis

CEDS UPS technicians together with CEDS qualified and experienced electrician’s can undertake assessment of the current site power and upgrade as maybe required with the new UPS system loading.

In conjunction with site power assessment a power quality analysis can also be carried out for your site.

This will show if there are any damaging power events on your site that could damage or cause malfunctions to your equipment. CEDS will install a analyser and leave it onsite to monitor for at least 1 week. This will record all power events and the data recorded from your site will be evaluated and a report generated providing you with findings and recommendations of actions required for rectification of the noted events.

UPS Repairs Onsite and at CEDS Dedicated Workshop

CEDS UPS technicians will attempt to rectify any UPS fault onsite first if safety and your operations are not compromised. Usually most UPS faults can be repaired on site relating to components and batteries. Parts and batteries are readily available from our reputable suppliers at short notice.

The option to remove the faulty UPS and take it to our fully equipped modern workshop will be the last resort and will be discussed clearly with you first if this step needs to be taken.

UPS Battery, Testing and Replacements

Batteries form a very critical part of the UPS systems. Batteries supply power to either assist with systematic shut down or keep the UPS running for a short period of time in order to allow the standby back up generator to start up and automatically transfer critical load to generator power.

During an unwanted power event the UPS automatically switches over to battery supply. Depending on the output power requirements and the “run time”, a battery or a string of batteries will be installed with the UPS.

Under normal conditions these batteries are being charged and battery condition monitored by the UPS. Battery condition and life is also determined by ambient temperature, charging and discharging and the quality & design.

Battery life can be anywhere between 1 year to 5 years or more depending the above factors. In order to maintain reliability and avoid disaster CEDS UPS technicians can carry out battery checks and testing at regular intervals for you.

The testing information gathered will be recorded and any impending faults on battery(s) identified and rectification proposal provided to you.

CEDS use quality replacement batteries from reputable suppliers. CEDS UPS technicians will dispose old batteries removed according to CEDS environmental policy.

Standby Generator Services

Organisations that need to provide power during power disruptions are most likely to include generators in their installations. Smaller operators are also taking up installing generators to suit their requirements.

Using generators minimises the requirement to have large battery capacity since the power required from the batteries is very short term to allow the generator to start up and automatically transfer the load to generator power.

Our experienced UPS technicians together with CEDS electrical team can discuss your requirements of a generator at your site and provide a custom plan that suits your operations and current setup.
